Painting the Romantic Landscape in Soft Pastels

March 26 at 9 am - A Beginner’s Workshop

 

Students will learn  pastels and safety, how to clean your pastels, fixative?,  mounting and framing: an actual demonstration with all materials;  working with photograghs – simplifying the landscape;  thumbnails, underpaintings, and toning.  The rest of the afternoon is devoted to rules of landscapes, and painting a beautiful landscape with step by step instructions and individual help.

Class Duration: 7 hours, more time if needed
Class times: 9:00 – 4:30 with an hour for lunch
Minimum Number of Students: 4
Target Age Range: Adults, Seniors

Students will be responsible for bringing the items on the attached supplies list.

SUPPLIES LIST

(Student is responsible for bringing the following supplies)

  1. A set of SOFT PASTEL STICKS as many colors as the student is able to acquire (especially greens and earth colors). (No Oil Pastels). Dick Blick brand pastels can be purchased at dickblick.com – a set of 48 sticks is $10.44. Jerry's Artarama jerrysartarama.com sells Mungyo Gallery Soft Pastel Squares – a wood set of 72 for $34.99. Jerry's also has Marie's - 50 sticks for $9.97.
  2. One - 11”x14” Uart 400 or 500 grit, or any sanded paper like Art Spectrum Colorfix paper, White Ampersand Pastelbord, or Wallis paper. Paula will have these for sale at the workshop, or you can purchase any of these papers at dickblick.com, jerrysartarama.com or other online art supply stores.
  3. Paper towels (Viva brand is a good one)
  4. Newspapers or drop cloth to put on the floor underneath your painting area.
  5. 2” wide foam brush. You can find them in WalMart, Lowes, or any of the craft stores.
  6. One round (firm) bristle paint brush.
  7. Vine charcoal for preliminary sketches.
  8. Sketchbook for thumbnail sketches and notes.
  9. Apron
  10. If you would like to bring an easel to work on, please do so.
