Ancient Egypt and the Nile,
Slideshow Oct. 16
October 16, 2008, 6:00 p.m. Thursday
evening in the Training Center. See slides taken by
the Hubbards on their trip to Egypt. Coffee and cookies
will be served. Free admission.
Charles and Sally Hubbard will show slides of their trip
to Egypt--last May 28 to June 7--at the Cowan Center for
the Arts on Thursday evening, Oct. 16, at 6 p.m. Sally’s
brother Waring McCrady accompanied them on the Grand Circle
trip which began in Cairo and went south to near the Sudan
border. Egypt is the exotic destination of a lifetime and
less expensive than Europe, and tourists are welcomed and
protected with great care and attention.
During five days in Cairo, they visited the Egyptian Museum,
the sphinx, pyramids at Giza and Sakkara, a hand-woven rug
factory, the Alabaster Mosque at the Citadel, a Coptic church,
the Khan el-Khalili Bazaar and historic homes in the oldest
part of the city. A day trip by train north to Alexandria
allowed them to see Roman and Greek ruins near the blue
Mediterranean and the fabulous new Alexandria Library, built
in honor of the world-famous library established by Alexander
in the third century B.C. and destroyed in the time of Caesar
and Cleopatra.
They flew south on Cairo Air to Abu Simbel to see the two
temples built by Pharoah Ramses II and incredibly relocated
uphill when the waters of Lake Nasser began to rise in 1960.
In Aswan they boarded the Anuket, their floating hotel for
seven days, enjoyed felucca rides on the wide river Nile
and visited the lovely Philae Temple complex, dedicated
to Isis, also relocated to the highest point of its island
in the lake. They watched a demonstration of papyrus paper
being made. In both ancient Egypt and at present, civilization
stretches within a mile to the east and west of the river;
the Nile is lined with towns and temples. Cruising north/downriver,
they stopped at Kom Ombo where Sobek, the crocodile god
was worshiped, and at Edfu’s Temple of Horus. From Luxor
they visited the Valleys of the Kings and Queens, the tomb
of Queen/King Hatshepsut, Karnak and Luxor. An overnight
trip to Quena provided an opportunity to see the Greco-Roman
Temple of Dendera dedicated to Hathor.

HUBBARD’S SLIDE SHOW PERU - Quechua Weaving
Workshop
One of the most beautiful towns included in Charles and
Sally Hubbard’s slide show of Peru at the Cowan Training
Center on Tuesday, Oct. 17, will be Chichero, at 12,000’
the highest place they visited. Two sisters, Nilda and Rosa
Alvarez established the Quechua Weaving Workshop to teach
historic ways to dye and weave alpaca wool. Rosa told the
guests that the paracas tradition of natural dyes and cotton
and wool weaving is 5,000 years old, older than ceramics.
The women and girls were in a walled, grassy compound, brilliantly
dressed in regional costume with their town’s unique broad,
flat-topped, decorative hats. They drove stakes into the
grass and started threading wool back and forth between
them to begin a length of woolen fabric. Others secured
sticks in the ground and started weaving belts with small
back-strap looms in the ancient Andean tradition. Thirty-six
weaving patterns represent as many towns; of particular
beauty was the edging binding the material, which was rounded
and featured a double-eye motif. After the presentation
the group walked to a local home for a lunch of cuy (guinea
pig), potato, and vegetables, served by young women with
babies tied in their brightly woven mantas.
