Speaker – Jarod Pearson

The public is invited to a special lecture on The History of Cowan Schools which will be held Sunday, November 20, 2011, 4:00 p.m. at the Cowan Center for the Arts, 301 Montgomery Street, Cowan, Tennessee.

Jarod Pearson will give a detailed overview, including pictures and stories, of schools in and around Cowan. The lecture will cover the first school in the area, a pioneer school located in the log cabin church at Goshen. Following the Civil War, Cowan was home to the Acme Academy and Big Springs School, which were the predecessors to Cowan Public School built in 1922. When logging camps were built in the mountains above Cowan, the Cold Springs School was built at Lakeview.

Other schools that will be mentioned include Thorogood School, St. Agnes' Parochial School, and the Greenhaw School. Some interesting anecdotes will include the first school buses to serve the Cowan area and the scheduled trains that carried Cowan students to and from the high school at Decherd. The founding of South Junior High will also be covered.

The History of Cowan Schools lecture is part of the ongoing lecture series at Cowan Center for the Arts. The lectures are free to attend and light refreshments are served.
