Cowan History Lecture at Cowan Center for the Arts

Cowan Center for the Arts will host a lecture on the History of Cowan, Tennessee on Sunday, February 28th, 5:00 p.m. in the theatre.

Jarod Pearson, the lecturer, will explain how the area known as Cowan was settled in the early 1800's and held Franklin County's first seat of government.  The area was originally known as Hawkins but renamed Cowan about the time that coal was discovered in the Cumberland Mountains and plans were being drawn to build a railroad between Nashville and Chattanooga.

Cowan played a vital role in the founding of The University of the South at Sewanee and also served as a major base for retail, manufacturing, tourism and transportation industries through the latter half of the 19th Century.

A question and answer period will be offered and refreshments will be served.
