On June 23, 1863 a battle began in Middle Tennessee between the Union Army of The Cumberland under the command of General William Rosecrans and the Confederate Army of Tennessee under the Command of General Braxton Bragg. These armies had faced each other several times including two of the biggest battles of the Civil War at Shiloh in April 1862 and Stones River in December 31, 1862. The Federals prevailed in both of these battles but the cost in lives was so large that it was a stretch to call them victories. A major engagement would not occur again for nearly 6 months, when on June 23, 1863, Union Gen Rosecrans would attack the Confederate’s defensive positions at several points along their over stretched battle lines. The battle would last 15 days until July 3. It would see a systematic withdrawal of the entire Confederate Army out of Middle Tennessee and relocation to Chattanooga. The brilliance of the Union’s attack plan could only be matched by the tenacity of the Confederates maneuver plan.
Our Sunday Lecture Series is always free to attend. Light refreshments will be served. Please join us for this Civil War program, part of our 150 year celebration.
