SPEAKER SCHEDULE
COWAN CENTER for the ARTS
Cowan, Tennessee
July 17 & 18, 2010

The 2010 Tennessee Antiquarian Book Fair will include three speakers on Saturday afternoon and two on Sunday afternoon.  Topics will include book collecting, history, and writing works of speculative fiction.  Scheduled speakers for Saturday afternoon are Dr. Edwin W. Brown, Dr. Michael R. Bradley, and Larry Woods.  Dr. David B. Coe and Rev. Dr. Christopher Bryan are scheduled for Sunday afternoon.  The sessions will take place in the theatre of the Cowan Center for the Arts located one block from Monterey Station.  Speaker signings and receptions will be held in Monterey Station.  One $5 general admission ticket will allow access to both the fair and all the sessions.  Theatre seating at the sessions is limited and will be on a first-come, first-served basis. 

Collecting the works of C. S. Lewis

Dr. Edwin W. Brown is the author of In Pursuit of C. S. Lewis and Around the World in Eighty Years.  Dr. Brown has gained the reputation of being the world's foremost collector of C. S. Lewis, having assembled the finest private collection known of Lewis first editions, manuscripts, letters and ephemera, now the Edwin W. Brown Collection at Taylor University, Upland, Indiana. The first half of In Pursuit of C. S. Lewis includes stories that span thirty years of collecting Lewis first editions, letters and manuscripts. The stories include Dr. Brown’s encounters and friendship with Walter Hooper, Pauline Baynes, George Sayer, and Owen Barfield among others. In addition to being a good storyteller, many of his stories provide significant information for Lewis scholars. The other half of the book is a descriptive bibliography of every Lewis first edition, US and UK, together with a detailed description of the dust jacket of each. It is a unique and invaluable reference source for collectors, booksellers, and librarians. Around the World in Eighty Years is the autobiography of a Harvard-educated physician whose professional career has taken him to more than 100 countries, bringing him into contact with persons in all walks of life, from presidents, kings, and the world's last emperor to the poorest of the poor.  

The Civil War in Middle Tennessee

Dr. Michael R. Bradley is the author of several books on the War Between the States period including Tullahoma: The 1863 Campaign; With Blood and Fire: Behind Union Lines in Middle Tennessee; Nathan Bedford Forrest’s Escort & Staff in War and Peace; It Happened in the Civil War; and Home Fires in the Line of Fire, published as part of an anthology titled Sister States/Enemy States  about the war in Tennessee and Kentucky.  Two recent articles have been published in North & South magazine; “Death Lists in Middle Tennessee,” and “In the Crosshairs: Confederate Civilians Targeted for Death by the United States Army.”   He also writes on other topics including the Revolutionary War, the Great Smoky Mountains, and historical stories.  Dr. Bradley has written for various reference works, including The Civil Rights Encyclopedia and The Tennessee Encyclopedia, and Sports Encyclopedia.  In February 2010 Dr. Bradley was appointed by Governor Phil Bredesen to the Tennessee Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission. 

Book Collecting 101

Larry Woods is a senior partner at Woods & Woods law firm in Nashville and is a professor teaching pre-law courses at Tennessee State University.  Larry and his wife Saralee own and operate the BookMan/BookWoman used bookstore near the campus of Vanderbilt University.  It is consistently voted as Nashville’s Best Used Bookstore by Nashville Scene readers.  Larry Woods is a lover of books. His obsession with books began as a boy when his mother took him on his first visit to the downtown Nashville Library. He discovered books that enabled him to travel anywhere through time and he was hooked. He began his serious collection first with Edgar Rice Burroughs and his Tarzan series and then moved on to collect all kinds of books. His personal collection now numbers more than 100,000 books, not including the books for sale at BookMan/BookWoman Used Books. When BookMan/BookWoman first opened, Saralee said the slogan of their store was “selling my husband's books.” Larry teaches classes about collecting books and identifying first editions. He is also a book reviewer for several newspapers and for television.

Conflict and Character Development in Works of Fantasy

Dr. David B. Coe is a prolific writer, specializing in fantasy and science fiction. His first novel, Children of Amarid, volume one of The LonTobyn Chronicle, was released by Tor Books in 1997. It was followed by The Outlanders (1998) and Eagle-Sage (2000). In 1999, The LonTobyn Chronicle was awarded the William L. Crawford Memorial Fantasy Award by the International Association for the Fantastic in the Arts (IAFA). David has written two other critically acclaimed fantasy series: Winds of the Forelands and Blood of the Southlands. David has also just finished writing the novelization for the Ridley Scott production of Robin Hood starring Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett. The movie will be in theaters in May 2010; the book will be released in April 2010. David is now at work on a couple of new fantasy projects both of which represent departures from his previous work. One is a mystery/fantasy project set in pre-Revolutionary Boston. This series, tentatively titled The Chronicles of the Thief Taker will be published by Tor Books under the name D.B. Jackson. The other project is a contemporary fantasy that combines mystery, contemporary fantasy, and science fiction in a series of stand-alone detective novels.

The Authority of the Bible for the Church Today

Rev. Dr. Christopher Bryan is author of And God Spoke: The Authority of the Bible for the Church Today; Render to Caesar: Jesus, the EarlyChurch, and the Roman Superpower; and two biblical commentaries, on the gospel of Mark and the letter to the Romans.  He is Visiting Professor of New Testament and C.K. Benedict Professor of New Testament, Emeritus in the School of Theology at the University of the South.  The Bible is perhaps the most widely read antiquarian book in the world today, and though many have knowledge of collectable Bibles, few know as much about the history of the early church and the formation of the Canon.  Emphasizing that the apostles and their followers were proclaiming the gospel story long before the New Testament existed, Rev. Dr. Bryan will lecture on the nature of the Bible’s authority and inspiration and how the Bible can inform our decision-making today.
